In-flight MET access for GA pilots
The potential benefits of in-flight MET access have been highlighted by New Southern Sky stakeholders at System Wide Information Management (SWIM) workshops and during the NSS roadshows.
Following an initiative by the Civil Aviation Authority’s Chief Meteorological Officer, Peter Lechner, the Authority’s legal team has confirmed that General Aviation (GA) pilots operating VFR can access real-time MET information using their cellular/data tablet devices in-flight (MetFlight, IFIS etc). This legal view was sought to clarify some misunderstanding in the GA community.
Note that this is currently NOT the case with any form of IFR operation - cellular/data tablet devices cannot be used in-flight as part of the operation of the aircraft.
